Cumberland View Aged Care in July 2026: NAIDOC Week, Christmas in July and new furry friends

Cumberland View Aged Care residents marked NAIDOC Week, celebrated Christmas in July and welcomed some gorgeous furry visitors this month, filling July with cultural celebrations, gentle exercise, creative activities and plenty of new friendships in our Wheelers Hill community.

Music and entertainment filled our days

Live music was a highlight of the month, with residents enjoying performances from Laurel McKenna, Alex Matthews and the ever popular Golden Girls, whose set had everyone swaying, clapping and singing along. Our Carter residents were treated to a lively afternoon with Jack the Music Man, while Susan G brought the soulful sound of the harp to a relaxed singalong. A steel drum session introduced residents to a new instrument and its history, and two Music Corner sessions gave residents the chance to enjoy ukulele, guitar and piano performances together.

Cultural celebrations brought us together

July was full of special days to mark together. We celebrated Bastille Day with a French inspired lunch, honoured Guinea Pig Day with a themed activity space, marked International UFO Day with out of this world decorations and afternoon tea, and enjoyed Teddy Bears’ Picnic Day with treasured teddies from childhood and a picnic feast prepared by our kitchen team. NAIDOC Week was recognised with a special entertainment session featuring the didgeridoo and much loved Australian classics, and we began getting into the spirit of Christmas in July, sorting baubles and decorations ahead of a festive lunch with turkey, ham, salmon and Christmas pudding.

Furry visitors brought smiles all around

Residents welcomed two special sets of visitors this month. Therapy Dog Winnie made a much loved visit, bringing cuddles, wagging tails and plenty of comfort, while guinea pigs Wendell and Maggie joined our Guinea Pig Day celebrations and were showered with attention.

Staying active in body and mind

Chris led relaxing chair tai chi and seated tai chi sessions throughout the month, giving residents a gentle way to exercise both body and mind. We also kept moving with balloon games and sensory activities designed to encourage laughter and engagement.

Creative corners and kitchen fun

Our creative side came out with Zentangle art, where residents enjoyed the calming benefits of pattern drawing. In the kitchen, Cooking in Carter saw residents baking a batch of delicious gluten free cupcakes together.

Outings, friendly competition and community groups

Our Men’s Group continued to be a highlight, meeting regularly for stories, laughter and encouragement, while residents also enjoyed outings for coffee and a little window shopping. Bingo in Madeline drew a good crowd, and our footy tipping competition remained a firm favourite, with over 40 residents submitting their weekly tips.

Birthdays, new friends and afternoon tea

We celebrated birthdays throughout July, including a special milestone 85th birthday, and welcomed new residents into the Cumberland View family. Lollipop Day had everyone guessing how many treats were in the jar, and we finished the month with a lovely high tea filled with yummy treats and good company.
